The history and practice of waist beads began in Africa centuries ago. In West Africa, waist beads have several names such as Jel-Jelli, Jigeda, Giri-Giri, Dialey, or Yomba. Waist beads have been known to be worn for rites of passage, healing, and even for enticing your significant other. The beads have also been worn for weight loss and body shaping. Wearing strings of waist beads forces the wearer to be aware of their size. If you gain two pounds, the beads will be the first to tell you. Since they don’t stretch, like clothes do, they simply roll up the waist until they find a place to sit comfortably. Beads higher up the body equal weight gain and beads lower the body mean weight loss. This means that waist beads are a simple method of monitoring weight without the scales. In ancient Egypt waist beads were called “girdles”. In Ghana and other parts of West Africa, women wear waist beads with bells on them and dipped in sweet smelling oils to sexually stimulate their partner. Many years ago, it was believed that the waist beads would help protect pregnant women or even provide birth control, some believe this folklore till this day. Yoruban women consider their waist beads to be “of the earth”, even the source of life. African women still wear them today to protect themselves from negative energy. Waist beads are traditionally to be worn under the clothing, below the belly button, for your personal beauty and adornment. There are many tales steeped in tradition, mostly tales of the beads remaining hidden. Now that modern culture has adopted the wearing of them, some prefer to wear them under their clothing, and some prefer to flaunt them on their beautiful bare bellies. Traditionally, many women receive their waist beads as young girls and they add to their waist beads and wear them throughout their lives, until death. Once you are connected to your healing waist beads, they become a part of you.
